Role & responsibilities of the Team Trainer

The team Trainer is responsible for the health and safety of the players. A certified Trainer must be in attendance for every game or practice. Trainers should not play a role as the Head Coach or Assistant Coach. Their focus is strictly on player and team risk and safety.

The Trainer is required to:

  • Play a significant role in establishing the team’s Emergency Action Plan (EAP) for emergency situations

  • Maintain the completed medical information form/records for each player

  • Ensure that each player completes a Rowan's Law acknowledgement form before stepping on the ice

  • Ensure that the required accident/injury reports are completed and to certify that injured players only return to play with the appropriate signed medical authorization

  • Monitor physical conditioning to ensure it is consistent with the level of play and ensure that players are physically prepared to function at their age level or the level of play

  • Accept responsibility for the condition of the dressing rooms

  • Be present in the dressing room before and after games until the last player leaves

  • Identify and report potentially dangerous situations that may lead to injury (e.g., ice surface, boards, dressing rooms)

  • Never leave an injured player alone

  • Ensure that players only participate in on-ice activities with CSA-approved equipment that is safe and in good condition, and in "full" equipment in accordance with all HEO Minor and Hockey Canada regulations

If your team’s Trainer is not available, the Head Coach must speak to the other team’s Head Coach to request to borrow their certified Trainer if needed. They must also notify the game Officials prior to the start of the game and note the absence on the game sheet.

Training and qualifications

Trainers, like all volunteers with the CPMHA, must have an OPP Police Records Check completed every two years, or sooner at the discretion of the CPMHA Executive. Upon completion, the request letter must be signed by a member of the CPMHA Executive and handed in with the record check form to the OPP.

All on-ice staff must also complete the required training and/or certifications for their role. As per the HEO requirements, all trainers and other on-ice staff must complete Respect in Sport Coach/Activity Leader (or Speak-Out), Hockey Canada's Gender Identity and Expression online course and be registered for any outstanding training clinics (must be able to provide proof of registration) before their first regular season league game or on-ice activity (Initiation program). All required courses must be taken before November 30th of the current season.

Trainers can reach out to the CPMHA Director Risk and Safety (safety@cpmha.ca) for more information, support or assistance with any player and team health and safety questions or concerns.
